[09:51:02] <olegfink> hey
[09:51:11] <olegfink> seems I got some problems with zipit update
[09:51:28] <olegfink> today I was in some place with an open wifi network, and it pulled in an update
[09:51:40] <olegfink> then it rebooted and asked to plug in ac
[09:52:00] <olegfink> so I just turned it off and when I got home, I plugged it in
[09:52:12] <olegfink> but now it doesn't want to connect to any network
[09:53:31] <olegfink> (doesn't ask for key, just says "trying network: ..." for every ap there and then complains it couldn't connect
[10:04:04] *** mozzwald has quit IRC
[10:06:02] <olegfink> did I just brick my zipit with the update?
[10:20:36] <madmoomix> stock zipit?
[10:23:51] <olegfink> yep
[10:24:02] <olegfink> why doesn't it want to connect?

[11:16:41] <rkdavis> ang: you watching the rsa vs france game?
[11:30:40] <olegfink> so, what should I do?
[11:36:20] <olegfink> rkdavis: will the zipit boot iz2s if it's stuck in firmware update mode?
[11:36:49] <olegfink> (and more generally, what's happening to it?)
[11:37:21] <Marex> olegfink: firmware update mode ?
[11:39:00] <olegfink> "zipit system update"
[11:39:11] <rkdavis> olegfink: nope and give me a few minutes to finish this email and i'll be here
[11:39:18] <olegfink> ok
[11:40:26] <olegfink> it's in what I'd call stage2, it downloaded the updated ramdisk off the air, rebooted and now wants to install it
[11:40:56] <olegfink> for that it wants ac adaptor plugged in and wireless, but doesn't seem to be able to connect to any network
[11:41:15] <olegfink> (at least it doesn't ask for password for protected ones)
[11:48:55] <rkdavis> ok here
[11:49:12] <rkdavis> olegfink: ooooooooooo
[11:49:22] <rkdavis> you coul;d be my best friend
[11:49:37] <rkdavis> olegfink: i'm not going to guarentee it'll work
[11:49:39] <rkdavis> but
[11:49:51] <rkdavis> do you have an sd card with iz2s installed on it
[11:50:38] <mozzwald> Marex: any idea why I'd be getting an error like this when compiling kernel? I did a fresh git yesterday and this error comes up. http://zipit.pastebin.com/nwDfWhTJ
[11:51:06] <olegfink> rkdavis: uhm, I guess I can go out for a bit and come back with microsd
[11:51:10] <olegfink> I only have SDs
[11:51:37] <rkdavis> olegfink: ok
[11:51:49] <olegfink> I need microsd, right?
[11:52:03] <rkdavis> do that pleas ebecause you might be able to solve a mystery i have been wanting to solve for almost 24 months
[11:52:14] <rkdavis> olegfink: micro with mini adapter
[11:52:17] <rkdavis> or mini sd
[11:52:32] <rkdavis> olegfink: the zipit uses mini sd cards
[11:52:46] <olegfink> ah, any recommendations on which one?
[11:53:07] <rkdavis> olegfink: i use sandisk but others like kingston
[11:53:07] <olegfink> especially if you say I need a fast one
[11:53:23] <rkdavis> sandisk ones if you are lucky come with a mini sd card adapter
[11:53:52] <olegfink> microsd seems to be much more widespread, right?
[11:54:26] <rkdavis> yes but when the zipit was designed mini sd cards were the big thing
[11:54:39] <rkdavis> but yes most ppl use microsd cards with an adapter
[11:55:10] <rkdavis> the only thing to make sure of is that it's microsd not microsdhc at least until you have upgraded the kernel
[11:55:54] <olegfink> well, I think 2gb will be enough and that shouldn't be hc, right?
[11:57:37] <rkdavis> yup
[11:58:17] <rkdavis> 2gig is plenty for iz2s (itll use about 2% of that and also it's ok for when you upgrade to a debian or ubuntu based rootfs and kernel
[11:58:52] <rkdavis> i do hope the ramdisk.tgz is still there and not deleted yet and the shell works, i want to check the update script it contains
[11:59:24] <rkdavis> i think it might have already been delted though but the z2update.sh script will still have the info i want if it hasn't been deleted
[11:59:36] <olegfink> hrm, I can't find any microsd->minisd adaptor
[12:01:02] <olegfink> rkdavis: by the way, what's the thing with the 2-stage update? it downloaded the ramdisk, rebooted, what it needs wireless for now?
[12:02:17] <rkdavis> olegfink: that's probably not what is happening
[12:03:09] <rkdavis> the ramdisk.tgz is actually installed and shoudl have been deleted and everythign would work, looks like the z2update.sh script isn't removed and that seems to be causing a problem
[12:03:26] <olegfink> ok
[12:03:27] <rkdavis> as then it will go into the ramdisk install theng again
[12:03:44] <olegfink> http://fast.ulmart.ru/good_big_pics/154637.jpg -- this doesn't include minisd adaptor, right?
[12:03:58] <rkdavis> no
[12:04:03] <rkdavis> you need
[12:04:12] <rkdavis> hold on let me find a url
[12:05:33] <rkdavis> http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Micro-Card-Adapter-Memory/dp/B000QDRQXU something that looks liek that is what you need
[12:06:11] <rkdavis> if you look at the kingston thing under what people buy that will be how it looks in the wrapper, a plastic case with 3 bits in it
[12:06:52] <olegfink> ok
[12:07:06] <rkdavis> olegfink: if there is a radioshack near you -- they still sometimes have a sandisk one with mini adapter left -- you might have to ask though for them to look in the back
[12:07:19] <olegfink> so, one hit so far, but it's transcend: http://fast.ulmart.ru/good_big_pics/131982.jpg
[12:07:34] <olegfink> rkdavis: russian climate is too cold for radioshacks
[12:08:28] <rkdavis> olegfink: hehehehe can we send them to you anyway please -- any gulags near you?
[12:09:02] <olegfink> hold on, let me find the damned card

[14:11:48] <geordy> mozzwald: how did you do the USB hack?
[14:12:47] <geordy> that is the suspense I was referring to
[14:13:08] <mozzwald> geordy: uboot, new kernel, and a hardware mod. :)
[14:13:47] <geordy> yeah but what are the specifics of the hardware mod though? that's the unknown for me....
[14:15:57] <geordy> like what do you have to do inside the zipit and where do you get the connector for the expansion port?
[14:16:40] <mozzwald> geordy: the connector part number can be found on the linux.zipitwireless.com site
[14:21:33] <azend> add a usb host controller?
[14:21:43] <azend> so mozzwald do you have full ubuntu usb support?
[14:22:54] <geordy> yeah, mozzwald is doling out the details in tiny hints :P
[14:23:25] <geordy> azend: check out this video if you want to see http://www.mozzwald.com/node/53
[14:23:30] <azend> kk
[14:24:00] <azend> so mozzwald if I have z2buntu running fine does that mean I have U-Boot and the updated kernel?
[14:24:06] <geordy> no
[14:24:28] <geordy> you have to reflash your zipit with uboot and an updated kernel
[14:25:20] <azend> dude
[14:25:30] <geordy> my thoughts exactly
[14:25:35] <rkdavis> geordy: he's not doleing out small details jsut to be a b******* well he is but when gpsfan and i were working on usb host we didn't feel it was /safe/ to tell the riff raff as it does require a hardware mod and a bootloader upgrade and hadn't/hasn't been well tested
[14:26:08] <azend> so I just get the port and hook up a usb hub to it
[14:26:12] <azend> that's it?!?
[14:26:13] <rkdavis> geordy: so only 4 people have the actual details on how to do the USB mod :) unless you pay me $1,000,000
[14:26:22] <azend> +reflash the kernel
[14:26:29] <rkdavis> azend: no you have to modify your zipit and there is no going back
[14:26:47] <mozzwald> yeah, I shouldn't have posted that video. :)
[14:27:10] <rkdavis> azend: you have to remove a resistor or cut a trace and although it looks like it doens't cause a problem there might be some weird corner case where it does but we haven't come across it yet
[14:27:24] <rkdavis> and repairing the mod is a very very very very skilled operation
[14:27:48] <rkdavis> mozzwald: what video?
[14:27:57] <rkdavis> mozzwald: linky please
[14:28:44] <mozzwald> http://www.mozzwald.com/node/53
[14:28:44] <azend> mozzwald: why didn't your remove it?
[14:28:46] <rkdavis> and actually the real reason is that we all decided that mozzwald was uberelite and should be the only one with host mod for 6 months :)
[14:28:56] <mozzwald> haha
[14:29:17] <mozzwald> I prefer the title uberturd. :)
[14:29:18] <rkdavis> mozzwald: how is it working? no problems so far?
[14:30:08] <mozzwald> rkdavis: occasionally I hafta unplug the hub and replug, but it might be my solder job. need to tear it apart and check still. otehr than that, works well
[14:31:24] <rkdavis> mozzwald: it might also be the mod in the zipit -- we never really found a reason for the resistors existence and if zipit had read the pxa27x design manual they'd have seen it wasn't needed but it might be there for some reason we don't know
[14:32:09] <mozzwald> rkdavis: so, maybe put it back on and see if she still works?
[14:32:18] <rkdavis> mozzwald: it doesn't
[14:32:26] <rkdavis> gpsfan and I already checked that
[14:32:54] <geordy> I can solder smt. That's not a problem for me
[14:32:56] <mozzwald> odd
[14:32:58] <rkdavis> for usb host to work the resistor has to be removed or disabled -- we are just not sure if the resistor is needed elsewhere
[14:33:44] <geordy> besides, fuxoring a $50 device isn't the end of my world. bring it on!
[14:33:46] <rkdavis> mozzwald: you need to get some screen wipes on your zipit lcd -- it's terribly dirty :)
[14:34:11] <mozzwald> rkdavis: I need to replace the screen protector I have. that's the problem I think
[14:34:11] <rkdavis> at least it looks a bit smudged
[14:36:17] <rkdavis> mozzwald: what usb devices have you tried so far? any wifi dongles or harddrives ort anything interesting?
[14:37:15] <rkdavis> ok got a refund on the cable and the other one should be here by next monday at the latest :)
[14:38:59] <mozzwald> mouse, keyboard, num pad, flash drive, camera (detected, but no driver tested)
[14:40:00] <geordy> did ya'll see this on hackaday? http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP430_LaunchPad_%28MSP-EXP430G2%29?DCMP=launchpad&HQS=Other+PR+launchpadwiki-pr
[14:41:57] <mozzwald> looks interesting
[14:42:05] <rkdavis> geordy: yes -- another toy to put on my wishlist and to bug the wife about for my birthday
[14:42:08] <mozzwald> hackaday.com
[14:42:24] <geordy> $4.30 for a full dev board with two uC's
[14:42:29] <geordy> not a bad deal at all
[14:46:45] <mozzwald> rkdavis: you ever try that cross compiler I linked to you?
[14:48:05] <rkdavis> mozzwald: not yet
[14:48:23] <rkdavis> haven't fired up the vm other than for yaze and z80pack in weeks
[14:48:37] <rkdavis> i got tied up with some scripting :( and football
[14:48:41] <rkdavis> :)
[14:48:56] <mozzwald> I'd blame the football. :)
[14:49:03] <azend> me wants to buy but the buy links are broken
[14:49:42] <madmoomix> maaaaan
[14:49:45] <madmoomix> just got word back
[14:49:51] <madmoomix> 8+ month wait for a pandora
[14:49:54] <madmoomix> :/
[14:50:02] <madmoomix> ebay tyme
[14:51:26] <rkdavis> oooo a nice nigerian gentleman wants to give me $3,500,000
[14:51:32] <rkdavis> i must reply to him i think
[14:56:18] <Marex> rkdavis: only so little ? pffff ... not worth replying ;_)
[14:56:44] <Marex> rkdavis: I was offered something like $14,000,000 ... it was so less I didn't even bother to reply to that :b
[14:56:44] *** adnyxo has joined #zipit
[14:56:57] <adnyxo> for what
[14:57:21] <adnyxo> hey guys, its been a little while
[14:57:49] <Marex> adnyxo: dunno ... I didn't read the mail any further :)
[14:58:33] <rkdavis> ok got one cable that marex sugegsted on it's way and with the refund i ordered anothe rcable from another place because i'd like to try it too as it's cheaper and well always handy to have 2 cables
[14:59:28] <azend> rkdavis: usps still hating you
[14:59:38] <azend> ?
[14:59:54] <rkdavis> azend: yes and no
[15:00:44] <rkdavis> they refusae to let me have the cable as it's not addressed to me but it was partially the shipeprs fault too -- they let the usps suggest a correction to the addresseven thoguh they knew it was wrong -- they assumed that the zipcode would make it a non-valid address and be corrected
[15:00:49] <rkdavis> but new york isn't like that
[15:01:14] <rkdavis> within the space of 10 miles you can have 3 or 4 streets with the same name the only difference is the zip code
[15:01:28] <mozzwald> Marex: I'm trying to compile the latest kernel, but I get an error. any idea what would be the cause? http://zipit.pastebin.com/nwDfWhTJ
[15:02:05] <Marex> mozzwald: hang on ... IRC is probably not the best thing to do while driving
[15:02:44] <azend> how do I take off the back of the zipit?
[15:02:47] <geordy> rkdavis: I think you guys should let the cat out of the bag. the more people you have working on it, the sooner you'll iron out the bugs.
[15:02:49] <Marex> mozzwald: add ... "#include <linux/slab.h>"
[15:02:52] <rkdavis> Marex: of course ti is :) that's what feet are for -- steering while texting
[15:02:55] <azend> just take out the screws on the back of the battery slot?
[15:02:57] <geordy> back of the screen or the bottom?
[15:03:12] <geordy> take out the three screws
[15:03:15] <Marex> rkdavis: don't worry ... I'm playing NFS U2
[15:03:17] <azend> or hook up your car to your zipit over usb
[15:03:20] <geordy> then there are four snap tabs
[15:03:35] <geordy> on the sides
[15:04:03] <geordy> you want to gently start prying either in the SD slot or in the back near the expansion connector
[15:04:19] <adnyxo> push inward on the bottom half
[15:04:21] <adnyxo> iirc
[15:04:25] <geordy> I have pictures of the whole process but I haven't posted them since I haven't made my serial board actually work yet
[15:04:56] <geordy> push inward on the top half actually it looks like
[15:05:28] <geordy> use an old credit card to pry with if you don't want to break anything
[15:05:44] <Marex> rkdavis: BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMm !!!
[15:05:59] <geordy> I used one of those keychain club cards to pry mine
[15:12:46] <azend> or make a spudger from an old toothbrush?
[15:15:08] <geordy> I suppose. I guess the point is to use something plastic to pry with
[15:16:00] <rkdavis> a guitar pick is supposed to be good too
[15:19:24] <mozzwald> I have a set of these which work for prying: http://www.harborfreight.com/6-piece-stainless-steel-carving-set-34152.html
[15:21:30] <rkdavis> i have this -- i find they open anything http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:C6Bzx4kleDqIeM:http://greenedmonton.ca/files/images/recycle-hardwood-the-tools.jpg
[15:21:55] <mozzwald> hehe

[15:25:41] <rkdavis> geordy: i pm'ed you some info :)
[15:26:06] <rkdavis> but if your zipit blows up, melts into a puddle of plastic or a meteor hits your house it ain't my fault

[23:12:35] <rkdavis> delete the -n

[23:18:56] <rkdavis> ang: it's probably the udhcpc havign problems -- on the original z2shell you often had to run udhcpc several times to get an ip address
