[08:50:07] *** Kevin` has joined #zipit
[08:50:33] <adnyxo> mind if i ask a question about winff?
[08:51:08] <Kevin`> do these devices have a usb port? device, host, or both?
[08:51:36] <adnyxo> no host yet iirc
[08:51:52] <Kevin`> so it has a physical usb port?
[08:53:25] <Kevin`> does the soc/board have host capability? the current limitation is software?
[08:54:56] <Kevin`> http://xkcd.com/644/ - i'm reminded of this
[08:58:49] *** mozzwald has quit IRC
[08:59:32] <Kevin`> how long does the battery work for with wireless?
[09:00:59] <adnyxo> not long enough
[09:01:35] <adnyxo> but theres no usb hardware yet
[09:01:42] <adnyxo> youll have to add your own usb port
[09:01:45] <adnyxo> i think
[09:01:48] <adnyxo> talk to rkdavis
[09:01:52] <adnyxo> or the people in the know
[09:01:58] <Kevin`> rkdavis: ping
[09:02:41] <rkdavis> pong
[09:02:49] <rkdavis> well png in a sec i need to get coffee brb
[09:02:53] <Kevin`> how can haz usb?
[09:05:03] <rkdavis> ok back
[09:06:10] <rkdavis> Kevin: usb host is possible but it's not well tested so no gaurentees as to what devices will work, mouse, keyboard and thumb drive have been tested but....
[09:06:47] <Kevin`> how, physically, do you connect it? is there a usb port already?
[09:07:01] <rkdavis> also you'll need a rear connector, to make a teeny hardware modification to your zipit and up grade your bootloader to u-boot and compile your own kernel .33+ with GPSFan's patches
[09:07:37] <rkdavis> Kevin`: the rear connector has usb client, with the modification it turns it into usb host (v1.1)
[09:08:19] <Kevin`> an adapter is needed then?
[09:08:42] <rkdavis> Kevin`: no adapter but you'll need to make your own cable
[09:09:07] <Kevin`> do you have a reference?
[09:09:19] <rkdavis> you need the rear connector (about 6 bucks from digikey), some wire and a usb female connector for the other end
[09:09:47] *** Limp_Trizkit has quit IRC
[09:10:16] <rkdavis> Kevin`: actually you are screwed -- there are no more connectors available
[09:10:29] <rkdavis> they seem to have sold the last 291
[09:10:32] *** Limp_Trizkit has joined #zipit
[09:10:35] <Kevin`> well what's the model for it
[09:10:46] <rkdavis> http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?lang=en&site=US&WT.z_homepage_link=hp_go_button&KeyWords=ST40X-36S-CV%2880%29&x=26&y=21
[09:11:14] <Kevin`> http://mouser.com/ProductDetail/Hirose-Electric/ST40X-36S-CV80/?qs=XQjbzJWzFPW%252bxHWx9TIZ2g%3d%3d
[09:11:22] <Kevin`> I call one of those 17
[09:11:44] <rkdavis> hmmmmm i think i know who bought all the digikey ones, i'll have to grab a few more of him
[09:12:04] <rkdavis> once mouser runs out i can sell them at exhorbitant prices :)
[09:12:25] <Kevin`> the'll get more eventually
[09:12:46] <rkdavis> Kevin`: nope hirose aren't making any more unless you order 2000 at a time
[09:12:55] <rkdavis> i rang and asked them a few months ago
[09:13:13] <Kevin`> I suspect digi-key will order that 2000, or already has
[09:13:20] <Kevin`> that's what they do
[09:13:25] <rkdavis> probably but one can hope
[09:13:33] <rkdavis> i could make a fortune :)
[09:14:05] <Kevin`> of you order all the parts from the link /I/ gave you and make me wait months for more i'll find you and kill you btw
[09:14:09] <Kevin`> :)
[09:14:37] <rkdavis> Kevin`: it's ok i'm brasic so i can't buy anything atm
[09:14:59] <rkdavis> but let me just ring steve, he has alot of room on hios credit card :)
[09:15:49] <rkdavis> actually i didn't think of that, they might have the solution for a cable i need. Adaptaplug type A on one end, 6" of cable and usb male on the other end
[09:16:15] <Kevin`> does the device have the pin available to attach a proper mini-a connector
[09:16:15] <Kevin`> ?
[09:17:33] <rkdavis> nope, what you see is what you get, if you look on the wiki you'll see the pinouts for the rear connector. that's basically it with regard to I/O unless you want to start working it over with a soldering iron
[09:17:49] <Kevin`> that requires registration iirc
[09:18:57] <Kevin`> although if you have usb host working, you obviously found a way to make it work anyway without the pin from the cable indicating whether to use host or device mode
[09:20:57] <rkdavis> yup well not -- it's either host mode if you make the mod or client if you don't
[09:21:25] <rkdavis> you'll also need a way to get power to the usb device too, using the zipit's battery will drian it quickly
[09:21:35] <rkdavis> so a powered hub or something is needed
[09:21:55] <rkdavis> Kevin`: yes the wiki requires registration but it's the only way to get the pinouts
[09:22:12] <Kevin`> oh yeah, the battery is 3.7v isn't it? does it have a dc-dc converter for 5v?
[09:22:13] <rkdavis> unless you want to reverse engineer them yourself
[09:33:30] <Kevin`> do you know? does the zipit have a 5v power rail anywhere?
[09:36:35] <rkdavis> not off hand, it obviopusly does because the wall wart is 5v but where to attach to it who knows
[09:39:10] <Kevin`> that would only work on wall power though
[09:40:21] <rkdavis> yup.
[09:41:57] <rkdavis> but as i said using usb on battery would not be good so you'll need either a portable powersupply for usb or be on the mains anyway
[09:43:33] <rkdavis> on the rear connector there is only 3.3v and 1.8v so you'll have to find the 5v somewhere else
[10:18:30] <Conrad-T-Pino1> Good morning.
[10:19:15] *** Conrad-T-Pino1 is now known as Conrad-T-Pino
[10:50:11] *** mozzwald has joined #zipit
[12:19:51] <rkdavis> mozzwald: just had a comment posted on my blog. they had a sugegstion, perhaps you shoudl do a quick video to show off the ubuntu rootfs :)
[12:47:55] <mozzwald> rkdavis: hmm... video.
[12:49:38] <rkdavis> mozzwald: it's how hunter became famous :)
[12:50:01] <Foxx> being famous isnt always a good thing
[12:50:07] <Foxx> take my word for it.
[12:50:09] <rkdavis> even a crappy cellphone camera video would do
[12:50:25] <Foxx> if you are going to do a video you might as well do it right
[12:50:35] <rkdavis> Foxx: i will and i know the feeling but then again accordign to the book i was a mysterious and enigmatic figure :) so i'm safe
[12:51:12] <rkdavis> Foxx: yes eventually he should do it right but have you seen the quality of hunters vids? not exactly blockbusters or art house
[12:51:16] <Foxx> with how popular BSoD became I get annoyed by lazy people asking me stupid questions about stupid stuff
[12:51:36] <Foxx> I regret doing my Zipit Z2 preview video
[12:51:54] <rkdavis> ok can't see why i'd want it but got s-lang/slsh pretty much working on the stock zipit :)
[12:52:10] <Foxx> ive had parents ask me if they should get one for their kid, up to morons asking me how to install ubuntu on it
[12:52:20] <Foxx> and people asking me what wifi is
[12:52:23] <rkdavis> think the module loading problem is because i made it static not shared so just a recompile shoudl fix that
[12:52:42] <rkdavis> Foxx: well now you can say yes they can have ubuntu on it :)
[12:52:43] <Foxx> and asking about service fees. you know, all the basic stuff the zipit website says
[12:53:10] <Foxx> ubuntu attracts fanboy jerkoffs that dont have a clue
[12:53:21] <Foxx> I dont publicly endorse it, or android
[12:53:44] <Foxx> for the main reason that the communities that devlop around it have their heads up their ass
[12:53:48] <mozzwald> yeah, I'm not sure I wanna be "famous"
[12:54:44] <Foxx> I dont want to be famous. It just happened. I didnt realize how big of a hit my segments would have been
[12:55:32] <Foxx> granted all my my material is all pretty densely packed tech turoials, mainly electronics and hardware hacking
[12:56:42] <Foxx> as soon as something gets the attention of the "OMFG l33t!!!!!!!" sterotypes ive gotta' back away
[13:00:49] <mozzwald> I'm not sure doing a video of ubuntu on the zipit would be worthwhile. It's pretty much the same as the Aliosa debian image at this point
[13:02:29] <Foxx> people are quick to jump on something because its "cool" or "leet", if published in the wrong way a video will just make things sour
[13:03:17] <Foxx> might be more trouble and annoyance in the end for you
[13:03:37] <Foxx> its why none of my stuff is ever released outside of BSoD
[13:06:28] <mozzwald> Yeah, people may get the wrong idea when I say ubuntu. :) Technically it's ubuntu, but it's prolly not what they're used to
[13:14:00] <rkdavis> i make really good sandwiches even if i do say so myself. -- pepperjack and roasted peppers and olives for 1 and ham, swiss, mayo and beetroot and onion
[13:15:52] <mozzwald> Make one for me :)
[13:16:19] <rkdavis> might get a bit moldy after i put it in the post
[13:16:24] <mozzwald> hehe
[13:16:43] <rkdavis> but you'll never get a bug again with all the penicillian
[13:25:42] <mozzwald> rk: you said yesterday we might be able to get ondemand working. Is that already in the patches available at openzipit?
[13:26:33] <mozzwald> cpu scaling, rather
[13:27:26] <rkdavis> mozzwald: it's in the newer kernels so it mightb e possible to fix or backport
[13:30:34] <mozzwald> that's out of my league I'm afraid. :)
[13:35:20] <rkdavis> the problem i had trying to get it working in stock is injecting some assembler into the kernel, couldn't get it right. in the .30+ kernels it works already just need to compile it into the kernel -- it's suppose to work in .29 but i think it was slightly broken on pxa27x but it might be fixible nowadays
[13:43:07] <enildeR> so one could actually use the latest kernel, or are there problems besides this?
[13:48:47] <mozzwald> apparently there's an issue with the zipit not having a machineid in the bootloader
[13:49:06] <mozzwald> so newer kernels need uboot instead of blob
[14:15:49] <enildeR> yeah. I know of uboot being needed
[14:35:08] <rkdavis> phew managed to find the kid 4 classes he can do for fall, couldn't get the one he needs to get his associates though, he left it too late to register so need to ut a big sign on the wall to remond him for spring
[14:53:26] <mozzwald> started compiling the .29 kernel on the zipit. any guesses on how long it will take?
[15:05:56] <rkdavis> by christmas
[15:06:10] <rkdavis> mozzwald: you have the serial mod don't yu?
