[07:16:30] <creazur> Hey! Does anyone have ideas about how to get alsa sounds working on rootnexus or side-track userland images?
[07:17:23] <creazur> Is it even possible ATM?
[07:22:35] *** marex has joined #zipit
[07:33:27] *** marex has quit IRC
[07:36:26] *** SDuensin has quit IRC
[08:49:22] *** valium1 has joined #zipit
[08:49:36] <valium1> wow, record low for users
[08:50:23] <valium1> has anyone used the latest rootnexus build?
[08:50:58] <valium1> I get a segfault whenever I try to run apt-get or aptitude
[08:56:04] <creazur> Same thing with me on rootnexus and side-track
[08:59:58] <rkdavis> valium1: / creazur how much swap partition do you have?
[09:00:27] <rkdavis> from watching this channel it seems that too small a swap seems to cause probs with apt
[09:00:42] <creazur> rkdavis: Problem is that I cant get swap working...
[09:00:44] <valium1> rkdavis: you know, thats a good question, I used the 1GB image on a 1 GB card
[09:00:57] <valium1> I used his RC0 with no problems
[09:00:57] <rkdavis> valium1: hmmmm you should have enough then
[09:01:06] <rkdavis> creazur: how so?
[09:01:26] <valium1> actually it said segmentation faultsts
[09:01:38] <rkdavis> valium1: if dTal appears, he knows alot about apt and rootnexus etc. he might be able to help you
[09:01:39] <creazur> I have tried rootnexus and now running side-track and neither one activates swap...
[09:02:24] <creazur> Clean install on image to card
[09:02:36] <rkdavis> creazur: weird, first report of that i've seen. probably the same answer as to valium1 -- try to grab dTal when he's around if you haven't got a solution before then
[09:02:54] <rkdavis> but weird
[09:02:54] <valium1> rkdavis: I'd be using the older release if I hadn't misplaced it, he's locked up all but one of the releases
[09:03:13] <creazur> There are four of us that share same problems
[09:03:17] <rkdavis> valium1: yup he was including some roms files that perhaps he shouldn't have
[09:03:44] <creazur> Also alsa sounds dont work. And wifi connection has to be made manually
[09:03:45] <valium1> shouldn't because of hte copyright issues, or shouldn't because of the racism?
[09:04:05] <rkdavis> racism????????? eh?
[09:04:16] <valium1> Super KKK Bros. was the NES rom
[09:04:36] <rkdavis> lol
[09:04:59] <creazur> rkdavis: One WiFi connection file suggests essid as ih8niggers
[09:05:14] <rkdavis> valium1: but it was copyright issues, it's really not a good idea to incl. roms in stuff
[09:05:49] <valium1> rkdavis: Funny, it has super mario world in it now.
[09:09:53] <creazur> Any idea when aliosa27 would be publishing next release?
[09:10:27] <valium1> I dunno, made a change in the sourceforge 2 weeks ago, but the release is still from sept.
[09:11:07] <valium1> rkdavis: I did some probing with my test equipment, the zipit2 is definitely NOT using SPI
[09:11:14] <creazur> valium1: K, been thinking that it could be worth testing since rootnexus has had so many problems on me...
[09:11:46] <valium1> creazur: the RC0 worked great for me, after applying the script patches.
[09:12:21] <creazur> Hmm... What does the script patches include?
[09:12:23] <valium1> this latest though, I dunno what to say, I kind of need apt to be working
[09:12:38] <valium1> it was basically power management
[09:12:49] <creazur> K
[09:13:03] <rkdavis> creazur: do you have another sd card you can install another rootfs on for a bit?
[09:13:52] <creazur> Dont have yet, and currently Im in classroom.
[09:14:10] <rkdavis> creazur: if you do put aliosa's debian on it and see if apt is workign on that one, apt and swap
[09:14:57] <valium1> for petes sakes, WHY did they used miniSD, I have never seen a miniSD slot on anything but this.
[09:15:33] <rkdavis> valium1: because of when it was designed (2006) when minisd was the most common sd format
[09:15:45] <rkdavis> but that is about the biggest complaint
[09:15:47] <valium1> there is enough room on the board that they COULD have put a full size SD slot or at least gone down to micro
[09:16:01] <creazur> Ive been kind of waiting the next release from aliosa. But maybe I should try older to see if it would work
[09:16:32] <rkdavis> yup i'm waiting for aliosa's next release, at least for one of my zipits
[09:19:07] <valium1> rkdavis, do you think it would be at all possible to just use the zipit2-audio+x+mouse.gz on it's own?
[09:19:09] *** nogitsune has joined #zipit
[09:27:04] <valium1> yay, writing aliosa27's 1GB image
[09:27:24] <rkdavis> valium1: on it's own?
[09:28:22] <valium1> rkdavis: as in, without all the extra thats in the full 1GB image, I'm just a little confused why both are needed, the only thing the smaller file is used for, it for the kernel
[09:28:59] <rkdavis> both are needed? they are two different rootfs
[09:29:11] <rkdavis> one is oe based and one is debian based
[09:29:42] <rkdavis> zipit2-audio...... is an oe based rootfs and debian/rootnexus/side-track are debian based ones
[09:29:50] <rkdavis> you just choose one or the toher
[09:30:07] <valium1> understood
[09:30:47] <valium1> another stupid question, know of a way to completely erase an SD card?
[09:35:30] <rkdavis> valium1: in windows use the panasonic sdformatter
[09:35:48] <rkdavis> in linux wipe the partition table and redo
[09:36:55] <valium1> ok, I just realized that I've got this partition hanging around thats breaking my image writes
[09:38:03] <valium1> physdiskwrite and allimage don't complain, they just exit silently
[09:38:26] <valium1> so it DOES write the image, but chops part of the swap off
[09:38:39] <valium1> while the partition table reports the full size
[09:38:54] <valium1> this may be part of the problem
[09:40:22] <creazur> valium1: Gotta check that one also on my card
[09:40:33] <creazur> Thx for the idea

[09:42:33] <valium1> oh wow... the SD reader on the left side of my netbook has a seperate, independant chipset from the one on the right, and they are made by different manufacturers.

[09:52:01] <SDuensin> Just start with the default Gnome. You can change it later if it's too heavy.

[20:19:57] <hunternet93> Is there a good way to speed up apt on the zipit? It takes a long time on the building dependencies stage.
[20:23:06] <wicknix2> add more swap and dont have any other apps running while using apt is about the best you can hope for
[20:23:43] <hunternet93> ok
[20:23:52] <hunternet93> i have 256 megs of swap right now
[20:24:05] <hunternet93> isn't the zipit supposed to have 32 megs of memory?
[20:24:11] <wicknix2> not the most powerfull unit, surprised it handles as much as it does.
[20:24:14] <wicknix2> yep
[20:24:26] <hunternet93> on my zipit free -m reports only 28
[20:24:36] <wicknix2> thats normal
[20:25:02] <wicknix2> no ram and/or hard drive is actually the size listed. always a bit less
[20:25:13] <hunternet93> oh it uses a ramdisk or something?
[20:25:18] <wicknix2> think they messure them in bits rather than bytes
[20:25:25] <wicknix2> measure*
[20:25:31] <hunternet93> ah
[20:25:50] <hunternet93> its a good handheld for 50 bucks
[20:25:57] <wicknix2> yeah cant complain
[20:26:14] <hunternet93> i like it as i don't have to be too careful with it. its expendable ;)
[20:26:20] <wicknix2> ben nanonote is $99 and doesnt even have built in wireless
[20:26:42] <wicknix2> so yeah zipit is a good deal
[20:28:01] <wicknix2> and the fact it can handle youtube videos (even though its kind of a hack) is insane
[20:29:33] <wicknix2> anyway, shower then off to fetch me some green beer. see ya.
[20:36:40] <hunternet93> Anyone have any multiplayer online games in mind that can run on the zipit?
