[12:32:25] <ericnobl> My first irc in years, but here goes... No iwconfig in the shell, and wpa_submittal is new to me. Any tips on configuring it, or modifying the command, for an unencrypted network?
[12:39:48] <sweetlilmre> hi, do a google for "wpa_supplicant WEP" you should find a page or two that will give you sample setups for no-enc/WEP/WPA etc
[12:41:25] <sweetlilmre> I have a WEP network, which took a while to figure out, but I got it in the end :
[12:41:26] <sweetlilmre> :)
[12:42:40] <ericnobl> That was my first idea, but the no-enc samples I've tried haven't worked yet, but I can keep trying if it's working for other people.
[12:42:50] <sweetlilmre> pastebin your config
[12:53:27] <ericnobl> Ok, pastebin done (I think). The script seems to assume key_mgmt is WPA, even when I specify NONE, so I finally tried just dropping that line.
[12:54:25] <sweetlilmre> this site: http://www.vollink.com/gary/deb_wifi.html suggests something like: http://zipit.pastebin.com/d2a365400
[12:59:27] <sweetlilmre> for an open ap.
[12:59:32] <sweetlilmre> bbiab
[12:59:36] <ericnobl> Thanks, I'll try that one. I guess I don't need to scan, but I do need to name my ssid since id doesn't broadcast.
[13:04:31] <sweetlilmre> ap_scan=2 at the topish of the config is also going to help :)
[13:09:56] <ericnobl> Nope. Stops at "Added interface eth0 \ Daemonize..." I'll try ap_scan=2 next. (Is there an editor in this shell? That would save a lot of card-swapping and rebooting.)
[13:12:49] <ericnobl> Maybe not. The OpenEmbedded wiki says "wpa_supplicant takes over the terminal; to exit, Ctrl-C can be sent by combining the Alt, "...", and C keys." But that doesn't seem to stop "Daemonize..."
[13:14:21] <ericnobl> So far the only way I can boot is by commenting out everything related to WPA in z2sript.sh, otherwise if locks up and I need to reset.
[13:33:34] <rkdavis> ericnobl: try pressing alt-...-z to get a ctrl-c
[13:33:38] <rkdavis> yeah i know makes no sense but it seemed to work
[13:34:08] <rkdavis> and yay think i have an xmpp client lib working on the zipit :) although i have to goto the laundry before i can check properly as otherwise wife will have no clean pjs or undies when she gets back from work
[13:43:13] <ericnobl> Well, it definitely doesn't like "ap_scan=2". Still freezing at "Daemonize..." and alt-...-z doesn't help. Still trying...
[13:43:18] <rkdavis> hmmm
[13:43:25] <rkdavis> hold i just need to boot my zipit to check something i'll check the keys
[13:49:31] <rkdavis> hmmm worked for me
[13:51:08] <ericnobl> Nothing. I see messages like "portEnabled=0" and "portValid=0", which don't sound promising, but I can't scroll back to see all the gory details.
[14:02:44] <ericnobl> I think the Ctrl-C key combos don't work because in the shell doesn't start until AFTER it sets up the network. There's probably a configuration trick I'm missing, because it connects without a problem until I run z2script, but I have to reset and swap the card for every change and I'm out of time today.
[14:03:12] <ericnobl> Thanks for the help, anyway. I'll check back in later.
[14:03:13] *** ericnobl has left #zipit
[14:24:23] <rkdavis> ugh this is getting frustrating -- the binary looks good but can't get the zipit to execute it :( keeps saying not found now matter how i try to run it. :(

[19:10:26] <rkdavis> GPSFan: you around?
[19:14:24] <GPSFan> howdy..
[19:14:36] <rkdavis> i'm having a pig of a time with an executbale built with the build root toolchain
[19:14:39] <rkdavis> wondered if you had any ideas
[19:14:45] <GPSFan> what's the error?
[19:14:47] <rkdavis> looks fine but on the zipit it says -sh basic not found
[19:14:51] <rkdavis> i've tried starting it as basic and ./basic
[19:14:58] <rkdavis> and nada
[19:15:00] <GPSFan> the app is named basic
[19:21:04] <rkdavis> yup
[19:21:12] <GPSFan> it's probably missing a library
[19:21:15] <rkdavis> it's static
[19:21:19] <rkdavis> well static lib plus libresolv
[19:21:41] <rkdavis> hmmmm actually might be it -- z2shell doesn't have uClib does it?
[19:22:02] <rkdavis> and oe probably doesn't have uClib either
[19:22:03] <GPSFan> ls /lib
[19:22:12] <rkdavis> mompls gotta find my sd card
[19:22:59] <rkdavis> ah could be it on z2shell
[19:23:06] <rkdavis> almost nowt in /lib
[19:23:08] <rkdavis> :)
[19:23:29] <GPSFan> the basic z2 has no libs, you must provide everything (almost) on the sd card.
[19:23:40] <rkdavis> doh! i wasted 5 hours on that today
[19:23:42] <rkdavis> although i did do laundry too
[19:23:53] <rkdavis> ok better copy some libs across to the card -- which br dir is the best one to grab the libs from?
[19:23:53] <GPSFan> good to have clean laundry ;>) btdt got the teeshirt & the scars to prove it.
[19:24:17] <GPSFan> buildroot/project_build_arm/Z2aBR/root
[19:29:19] <rkdavis> ok copied those to the card
[19:31:26] <GPSFan> sweetlilmre & I got kernel 2.6.27.10 booting. it has frame buffer problems, lots of stuff changed between .21.1 & .27.10 lots of bloat too.
[19:31:35] <rkdavis> yay got an xmpp lib working
[19:31:47] <GPSFan> !! good work !!
[19:31:53] <rkdavis> can't get the lua wrapper and lua workign yet
[19:31:56] <rkdavis> but looks like the example works
[19:32:15] <rkdavis> and doh! i need to be shot the amount of time i wasted trying to get it running without libs :)
[19:33:03] <GPSFan> if you used my basic .config for buildroot it should have built strace. very useful for things like that. should have it build ldd too. same reason.
[19:33:27] <rkdavis> it lives :)
[19:33:34] <rkdavis> it works correctly
[19:33:36] <GPSFan> it's alllllive....
[19:33:38] <rkdavis> i logged into my xmpp account
[19:34:09] <rkdavis> doesn't do legacy auth so i need to deal with that but i now have the basics
[19:34:37] *** drmikecrowe has joined #zipit
[19:34:42] <rkdavis> evening drmikecrowe
[19:40:37] <GPSFan> rkdavis: could you write up a simple description of what you did, why it's useful and how to re-create it? then post it to either the elinux wiki or the zipitwireless wiki.
[19:40:43] <rkdavis> i actually have a script
[19:40:49] <rkdavis> just copy it to the library dir and run
[19:40:57] <rkdavis> after changing my path of course
[19:41:02] <GPSFan> neato. I'm not familiar with xmpp or what you do with it.
[19:41:14] <rkdavis> one IM to rule them all
[19:41:21] *** drmikecrowe has left #zipit
[19:41:22] <GPSFan> ah.

[19:41:36] *** drmikecrowe has joined #zipit
[19:41:40] <drmikecrowe> finally. what a pita
[19:41:40] <rkdavis> and is the IETF standard for IM
[19:41:41] <rkdavis> heh
[19:41:43] <GPSFan> guess I'm behind the times, all I use is IRC.
[19:41:43] <drmikecrowe> hey rkdavis, what's up?
[19:41:46] <rkdavis> mompls wife coming up the staors
[19:42:10] <GPSFan> drmikecrowe: hey, happy new year
[19:42:11] <rkdavis> but got libstrophe working on the ziput]
[19:42:22] <drmikecrowe> GPSFan, you too!
[19:42:32] <rkdavis> now to get verse and lua working
[19:42:41] <rkdavis> but partially there with an xmpp client
[19:42:50] <drmikecrowe> hey rk, didn't know you were a lua fan. that's cool
[19:42:54] <rkdavis> but mompls wife in so i have to talk 2 her
[19:43:01] <rkdavis> nnot a lua fan but lesaning
[19:43:03] <GPSFan> bbl dinner...
[19:54:20] <rkdavis> drmike: not a fan. i've looked at it on and off over the years. just seemed a bit convoluted and not having a single /standard/ interpreter was a bit confusing but the xmpp lib i have working on the zipit has been wrapped for lua and that allows for lua to be used to write a client and it's extendable in lua too for the XEPs
[19:54:39] <rkdavis> and of course lua seems to work on the zipit -- not sure how well but looks likea good way to get xmpp working on the zipit at least from z2shell or oe
[20:04:09] <drmikecrowe> rk: it works very well. using it for my social interface
[20:12:28] <rkdavis> i kept meaning to go back to it over the years but never really had a reason to as other things did their job but verse looks nice and that needs/uses lua which needs libstrophe so i started working on it today and have the first part built and running at least it's examples so next is to see how to solve the wrapping errors on x86 version so i can try it on arm with a known working setup
[22:39:12] <rkdavis> yay think i have managed to get verse compiled :)
[22:39:20] <rkdavis> step 2 complete (if i am right :) )
[22:57:43] *** nsfx has left #zipit
[23:16:45] <rkdavis> i forget -- which is the escape key on the zipit?
[23:18:42] *** drmikecrowe_ has joined #zipit

[23:18:55] <rkdavis> drmikecrowe: got a min to answer a lua question?
[23:18:58] <drmikecrowe_> shoot
[23:19:05] <rkdavis> ok built lua and verse
[23:19:12] <rkdavis> but get an error
[23:19:24] <rkdavis> when i run test.lua which contains require 'verse'
[23:19:28] <rkdavis> the error is
[23:19:49] <drmikecrowe_> the error is...?
[23:19:53] <rkdavis> lua ./verse.lua/:1 loop or previous error loading module 'verse'
[23:25:17] <rkdavis> then i get a stack traceback'
[23:25:27] <rkdavis> think it's a location thing for the verse and strophe.so
[23:25:36] <rkdavis> but not sure
[23:26:03] <rkdavis> change the verse.lua to test.lua -- my fingers got confused
[23:26:08] <drmikecrowe_> hmmm, you probably need to check your LUA environment variables
[23:26:11] <drmikecrowe_> is everything in the samedirectory?
[23:26:12] <rkdavis> nope
[23:26:16] <rkdavis> so it probably is the variables then
[23:26:34] <drmikecrowe_> yeah, there are environment variables which tell the VM where to load the .so and .lua files
[23:26:35] <rkdavis> i have the .so in /usr/lib/lua/5.1 and verse is in /usr/share/lua/5.1/verse
[23:26:43] <rkdavis> ah that is probably it -- guess i should have rtfm'ed then
[23:26:56] <rkdavis> BUT if this does work then we havea xmpp client lib in lua for the zipit :)
[23:27:14] <rkdavis> and which key is the Escape key on the zipit in Z2Shell? :)
[23:27:15] <drmikecrowe_> hmmm

[23:38:29] <rkdavis> it's trying to load from where i set lua_path to
[23:39:49] <drmikecrowe> which one, the .so or the .lua files?
[23:45:31] <drmikecrowe> most libraries sometimes include a .lua and a .so. LUA_PATH should point to the .lua files, and LUA_CPATH point to the .so files
[23:47:02] <rkdavis> yup that's what i set it too
[23:47:16] <rkdavis> copied everything to the home dir and cleared the envvars
