drmikecrowe: hey |
| [14:54:57] |
<echelon> |
GPSFan: so if i use the z2 shell hack, i get to use the kernel shipped with the z2? |
| [14:56:15] |
<jhaluska> |
How's the Z2 hacking going? |
| [14:57:04] |
<echelon> |
jhaluska: that's what i'm trying to understand |
| [14:57:37] |
<jhaluska> |
Yeah, I would like to spend more time doing it. Once I get my car running. |
| [14:58:49] |
<echelon> |
if it does use the original z2 kernel, it should be able to support audio, and there shouldn't be any issues with the wireless card |
| [15:04:59] |
<jhaluska> |
I have mine hacked but it doesn't use wireless so its not very useful |

jhaluska: you need wpa_supplicant |
| [15:11:02] |
<jhaluska> |
I need to figure out how to roll my own too :) |
| [15:16:19] |
<drmikecrowe> |
echelon, back |

<drmikecrowe> |
hi guys |
| [15:17:07] |
<echelon> |
hey |
| [15:18:35] |
<echelon> |
jhaluska: even if your access point isn't encrypted, you can use wpa_supplicant to configure your wireless settings |
| [15:19:13] |
<jhaluska> |
Thats good to hear, cause it is right now :) |

echelon: sorry, been out all day, Yes when you use any of the z2 shell hacks you will be running the stock kernel that's in mtd1. The only way to run an alternate kernel is to load one through the serial port via blob, or to flash one via jtag or userspace mtd utilities. In either case the new kernel must carry the same version that the original one (and be compiled from the zipit-provided sources) so that the wireless driver will work. |

GPSFan_: does openembedded build a separate kernel? |
| [22:02:42] |
<GPSFan_> |
echelon: I think so, but no one who has gotten OE to "work properly" has had serial port or Jtag access to try out a new kerne. T0mW tried flashing a new kernel that he built with the userland mtd tools, but it bricked his (first) z2 since hd didn't have the initramfs set up propely. |
| [22:03:33] |
<echelon> |
oh dear :\ |
| [22:04:02] |
<GPSFan_> |
I have loaded a kernel that I built with the buildroot toolchain via tha serial port and booted it up, the wireless drivers loaded ok & worked. but I have npt flashed it. (it was an experiment to see if I could duplicate the kernel). |
| [22:04:11] |
<echelon> |
but if it uses the same kernel, why doesn't audio support exist from the shell hack/oe? |
| [22:04:22] |
<GPSFan_> |
you got me... I haven't played withthe audio at all. |
| [22:05:53] |
<echelon> |
i wanted to write a ncurses-based clone for the z2 media player |
| [22:06:19] |
<echelon> |
that pushes the stream urls to the z2 |
| [22:09:57] |
<echelon> |
i guess i'll stick with wireless for now |
