[09:05:43] <echelon> i got X running :)
[09:14:09] *** GPSFan has joined #zipit
[09:14:16] <echelon> GPSFan: hey
[09:14:39] <GPSFan> echelon: g'day
[09:14:48] <echelon> i got X server running :)
[09:15:35] <echelon> now.. how do i create my own bitbake packages for OE?
[09:15:44] <echelon> i want to port wavemon
[09:18:37] <GPSFan> I know nothing about OE other than I can't make it work. However I have ported wavemon (which just needs ncurses. there are a few pix on the yahoo photo's section.
[09:19:05] <echelon> why can't you get it to work?
[09:19:14] <echelon> you don't have the proper environment?
[09:19:25] <echelon> my problem was that i couldn't get buildroot to work heh
[09:20:17] <GPSFan> every time I try to build it it breaks in a different way, and it takes 6 hours to build on my puny little 2.3GHz single core 1.2G linux box.
[09:21:40] <GPSFan> with tomw's help I got it to build once. and it took 6 hours. the resulting code did not run. and I could never get it to build again without breaking.
[09:22:32] <echelon> just make sure you have a stable connection.. i have a 1.6ghz, i just left it running over night
[09:22:43] <echelon> by morning everything was done
[09:22:59] <echelon> and you probably need 2-4gb
[09:24:37] <echelon> i'm currently using 2.2G
[09:24:53] <echelon> building gtk+ now
[09:25:30] <GPSFan> I tried that, after the successful build that tomw helped me with I changed someting and something unrelated broke. I had no clue why, and frankly didn't have the time or the inclination to really dig into it. That said, I think that OE has one of the most powerful and flexible build systems I've seen. I just can't make it work.
[09:25:56] <echelon> you checked all the dependencies?
[09:26:32] <echelon> http://wiki.openembedded.net/index.php/OEandYourDistro
[09:28:11] <echelon> i've had to install psyco, quilt, help2man.. the zipit distribution builds a local copy of bitbake and monotone
[09:29:47] <echelon> z2_oe_base-image_svn_r59.tar.gz didn't work for me either
[09:30:47] <echelon> but the one from clemsonlinux.org worked
[09:30:58] <echelon> and also the one i built
[09:30:59] <GPSFan> that was quite some time ago, things have probably changed, I'll give it another try someday. the z2 is not at the top of the rpriority list these days.
[09:31:21] <GPSFan> If I can't rebuild something myself, I won't usually use it on an embedded system.
[09:31:23] <echelon> the same goes for everyone else here :P
[09:31:50] <echelon> you've had to patch wavemon, yeah?
[09:31:57] <GPSFan> I've been using buildroot since the tuxscreen days and believe me it's gone through some issues over the years.
[09:32:37] <echelon> there isn't even a stable release
[09:32:42] <echelon> all the patches are broken
[09:33:42] <GPSFan> wavemon required a lot of work even beyond the stuff I did for the z1. THere were a lot of wireless driver issues. but it works, in color too. ;>)
[09:34:29] <echelon> these were the patches i made when i released it for my distro.. http://slackbuilds.org/slackbuilds/12.1/network/wavemon/patches/
[09:37:00] <GPSFan> those are off wavemon 0.4.0b ?
[09:38:31] <echelon> yeah
[09:39:47] <echelon> i don't think there's been a release since.. 2001
[09:40:22] <echelon> 2003, rather
[09:42:55] <echelon> GPSFan: how did you work out the F# keys?
[09:44:09] <GPSFan> I got rid of the Fn keys on my z1 port, I just use numbers from 1 to 5. since you have to press the alt key anyway to get to the numbers.
[09:51:43] <echelon> ah kk
[09:52:25] <echelon> GPSFan: you haven't been able to turn off the screen right?
[09:53:55] <GPSFan> what do you mean by turn it off?
[09:54:10] <echelon> after inactivity
[09:54:17] <echelon> or after the lid is closed
[09:54:52] <echelon> it's able to detect when the lid is closed in the original firmware, right?
[09:56:57] <GPSFan> theere is a builtin timeout for inactivity, if you echo -e "\033[9;0]" that will turn it off.
[09:57:19] <GPSFan> there is another to re-enable it.
[09:57:32] <echelon> ah, will have to make a note of that
[09:57:41] <echelon> but nothing on lid state?
[09:57:52] <GPSFan> as for lid switch, baattery charger, led's, etc. thats all TBD.
[09:57:59] <echelon> kk
[09:58:08] <GPSFan> there is a magnetic switch for the lid switch IIRC.
[10:10:28] <echelon> wow.. OE supports a lot of packages
[12:38:40] <echelon> can someone using OE test a .bb file for me?
[12:55:29] <echelon> GPSFan: have you released your patches?
[13:24:17] *** Mathiasdm has quit IRC

[15:32:06] <echelon> silly yahoo group members.. why would it lock you out of the device entirely after the 14 day trial?

[21:14:42] <echelon> damn it!
[21:14:51] <echelon> i got wavemon to build on OE, and now it segfaults
[21:16:09] <echelon> how the heck do i debug OE apps?
[21:16:19] <echelon> without running it on zipit
[21:19:45] <echelon> nvm, just read about devshell
[21:19:58] <echelon> seriously, where is everybody?
[21:21:30] <echelon> getting ready to go back to school?
[21:21:37] <echelon> i mean that is the demographic zipit is trying to reach
[23:09:19] *** GPSFan has quit IRC
[23:17:35] <echelon> i got wavemon running! :D
[23:18:24] <echelon> where do i submit the bitbake package?
