[00:07:20] *** GPSFan has quit IRC
[00:54:45] <crazymonkeypants> switchat: because the problem isn't Debian, it's the VM
[00:55:18] <crazymonkeypants> I managed to get it installed, but I'm still trying to work out how to ssh to the stupid thing
[00:55:25] <crazymonkeypants> its keyboard emulation is annoyingly flaky
[01:07:54] <Switchcat> oh, what is your primary OS?
[02:52:21] <crazymonkeypants> Darwin
[02:52:36] <crazymonkeypants> Now I'm in the process of bootstrapping the DNS-323
[02:52:44] <crazymonkeypants> 100Mbps NFS ftw
[03:02:40] <Switchcat> darwin as in you run a mac, or as in darwin as you run darwin without all the other stuff on top of it?
[03:02:59] <Switchcat> (and if so, darwin without all the other stuff, why??)

[10:19:47] <crazymonkeypants> Darwin as in I spend most of my day at a shell prompt on a Macintosh
[10:21:56] <g1powermac_apl> hmm, I really need to figure out what the default rootfs would be. . .
[10:22:08] <g1powermac_apl> trying to boot my custom kernel and its dying because it wants to know what the rootfs is
[10:28:14] <crazymonkeypants> The stock system uses one of the mtd's
[10:28:26] <crazymonkeypants> third one, IIRC
[10:28:53] <crazymonkeypants> mtd2
[10:29:04] <crazymonkeypants> er, wait
[10:29:05] <g1powermac_apl> this is what I get:
[10:29:08] <g1powermac_apl> mmc_rescan...
[10:29:08] <g1powermac_apl> VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block(0,0)
[10:29:08] <g1powermac_apl> Please append a correct "root=" boot option
[10:29:08] <g1powermac_apl> Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
[10:29:20] <crazymonkeypants> You need an initramfs
[10:29:27] <crazymonkeypants> or whatever it's called
[10:29:31] <g1powermac_apl> hmm
[10:29:43] <crazymonkeypants> the stock setup uses one, and then mounts mtd2 on /mnt/ffs
[10:30:21] <g1powermac_apl> thats the thing, the kernel needs to find the stock initramfs. . .
[10:30:31] <g1powermac_apl> I didn't create a new one
[10:38:58] <crazymonkeypants> It's compiled/smushed into the kernel
[10:39:41] <crazymonkeypants> -rwxr-xr-x 1 msmith staff 65536 Jul 20 16:54 partition_0.bin
[10:39:41] <crazymonkeypants> -rwxr-xr-x 1 msmith staff 2293760 Jul 20 16:54 partition_1

[10:39:52] <crazymonkeypants> blob, kernel/ramfs, applications
[10:40:42] <g1powermac_apl> hmm
[10:41:24] <crazymonkeypants> I'm still a nub at this, so I don't know how it's normally done

[14:27:16] <g1powermac_apl> crazymonkeypants, finally got my kernel to work :-)
[14:27:29] <g1powermac_apl> turned out to be the initramfs after all
[14:27:42] * g1powermac_apl is now building a new qtopia
[14:28:00] <g1powermac_apl> and at the same time poking around a bit in linux system using the serial connection
[14:35:16] <crazymonkeypants> So the initramfs is smushed in with the kernel somehow?
[14:35:21] <g1powermac_apl> yea
[14:35:34] <g1powermac_apl> dang, my qtopia build failed
[14:37:20] <g1powermac_apl> hey, do you have any idea what this /etc/cal_data_ext.conf file is for in the linux system on the z2?
[14:38:06] <g1powermac_apl> that is one odd file
[14:41:56] <crazymonkeypants> I have not actually looked at it
[14:42:55] <g1powermac_apl> its definitely some kind of configuration data, and by the name, I figure it maybe for some external hardware calibration
[14:44:58] <crazymonkeypants> I have a suspicion it's probably antenna calibration data for the wifi
[14:47:03] <g1powermac_apl> hmm, may be
[14:48:04] <crazymonkeypants> It's handled by the app, at any rate

[15:14:24] <crazymonkeypants> Ugh, the Prolific driver really blows chunks
[15:21:29] <crazymonkeypants> But, I have a linux-arm system up and running
[15:22:32] *** Mathiasdm has joined #zipit
[15:24:15] <g1powermac_apl> well, fixed the qtopia build
[15:24:24] <g1powermac_apl> I must have never built qtopia on this machine
[15:24:36] <crazymonkeypants> 8)
[15:24:43] <crazymonkeypants> Now I have to work out how to build blob
[15:24:45] <g1powermac_apl> or something
[15:25:55] <g1powermac_apl> man, this machine sounds like a vacuum cleaner when compiling anything big

[22:33:24] * g1powermac_apl has been a hacking tonight
[22:33:39] <g1powermac_apl> I got preliminary results from the usb gadget stuff
[22:34:17] <g1powermac_apl> first off, soldering the back connector is a royal PITA, make sure you use intermediary wires from the usb cable to the connector, something like 30 ga
[22:34:57] <g1powermac_apl> now, if I let the zipit app start up with the usb connected, I get this in the host's dmesg: http://pastebin.ca/1091393
[22:35:43] <g1powermac_apl> basically thats saying the usb port isn't setup as expected
[22:36:09] <g1powermac_apl> now with the usb gadget kernel with modules I get this: http://pastebin.ca/1091401
[22:36:29] <g1powermac_apl> looks like some interesting stuff on both the Host's dmesg as well as the zipits
