[04:10:46] * unrest yawns
[04:19:11] <unrest> does anyone in here have a z2 up and running with oe and one of the guis?
[04:19:52] <unrest> if so: i *need* the content of /etc/X11/xkb/
[04:31:12] *** FireEgl has quit IRC
[05:34:43] *** g1powermac_PB has joined #zipit
[05:45:32] *** unrest has quit IRC

[06:02:30] <unrest> foxx, you there?
[06:18:21] *** aesonn has joined #zipit
[06:28:03] <Foxx> yes i am, whats up?
[06:33:53] *** g1powermac_PB has quit IRC
[06:35:45] <unrest> 40 bucks for a soldering station's enuff?
[06:35:57] <Foxx> i use an $8 iron
[06:35:59] <unrest> i got two irons and want to replace them against one regulated..
[06:36:22] <unrest> even for your favourite work: ps2 modding? o.0
[06:36:25] <Foxx> yah
[06:36:51] <unrest> with a filed down tip i guess?
[06:36:53] <Foxx> i put an in-line light dimmer to lower it from 45W to 35W, 25W, 10W, et
[06:37:05] <unrest> ah. ok
[06:37:15] <Foxx> yeah, i spent a lot of time on the tip
[06:37:20] <unrest> btw: how come your still "up"?
[06:37:23] <Foxx> i made it VERY sharp
[06:37:29] <Foxx> i dont sleep much
[06:37:39] <unrest> caffeine or speed?
[06:37:40] <Foxx> i tried to sleep, and failed
[06:37:46] <Foxx> insomnia
[06:39:03] <Foxx> i tried to take my sleeping pills, but they only knocked me out for about an hour
[06:42:40] <unrest> mediation?
[06:42:51] <unrest> a hard blow to the neck with a hammer?
[06:42:56] <unrest> ;)
[06:53:15] <unrest> HAHAA!
[06:53:20] <unrest> my zipit left the states
[06:53:23] <unrest> Your item left the United States from O'HARE APT/CHICAGO at 9:54 PM on July 8, 2008. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.
[06:56:49] <unrest> so it'll be somewhere in europe in about 5 hours..
[06:56:54] <unrest> likely frankfurt
[06:57:32] <unrest> so if those tax tards don't want to fuck with me i may have my z2 until the weekend
[08:03:32] *** jhaluska has joined #zipit
[08:04:14] <unrest> oh..
[08:04:20] <unrest> what i've just found out:
[08:04:52] *** g1powermac_PB has joined #zipit
[08:04:59] <unrest> via SHIFT+NUM you toggle softmouse emulation in x, which allows you to use the numpad for mousecontrol
[08:06:08] <jhaluska> unrest: Interesting
[08:07:00] <unrest> so "mouse" on the z2 is just a matter of getting the keycodes we want (showkey) and map them to the numpad characters..
[08:08:17] <unrest> which afaik can be done with xmodmap
[08:09:13] <unrest> it can be done this way
[08:09:30] <unrest> moving the mouse via numpad is.. umm..strange, but it works
[08:22:37] <unrest> jhaluska, you have your z2 at hand, don't you?
[08:22:42] <jhaluska> yes
[08:24:38] <unrest> have you built an image with one of the guis yet?
[08:24:46] <jhaluska> I haven't even built one without a gui yet.
[08:24:58] <unrest> ...
[08:26:09] <jhaluska> I might try again on one of my slower computers that I can afford to f-up
[08:26:39] <unrest> you won't fuck up ur box with oe...
[08:27:10] <jhaluska> It's my work computer, It might fuck up my build environment.
[08:27:15] <jhaluska> I have to wait for T0mW to get online.
[08:28:03] <unrest> why not experiment on your own?
[08:28:19] <jhaluska> Don't have enough disk space on my laptop.
[08:31:28] <Foxx> i tend to run development linux distros in VMWare
[08:31:40] <Foxx> that way i cant really destory the host OS if i really botch something up
[08:31:49] <Foxx> well... when i can run it in VM
[08:32:08] <Foxx> sometimes you need explicit hardware level access VM cant offer
[08:46:23] *** GPSFan has joined #zipit
[08:47:45] <jhaluska> Good Morning GPSFan
[08:48:11] <GPSFan> jhaluska: g'day
[09:01:46] <unrest> jhaluska, were there other "skins" in your z2s package. those plastic thingies to change the outer colour..
[09:03:49] <jhaluska> hmm, I don't remember seeing any.
[09:04:01] <unrest> dammit..
[09:04:56] <jhaluska> Why?
[09:06:00] <unrest> i had the idea of making a cf skin for the z2...
[09:06:20] <unrest> but as they're hard to get here i don't want to risk killing the casing of my only unit..
[09:06:40] <unrest> so it'd have been utterly great if there wore other thingies inside the package..
[09:06:46] <jhaluska> Where is "here"?
[09:06:51] <unrest> germany
[09:07:09] <jhaluska> A CF would look pretty snazy
[09:07:14] <jhaluska> Are you a CF expert?
[09:07:22] <unrest> amateur, but skilled :)
[09:07:38] <jhaluska> Is it expensive to get into?
[09:08:01] <unrest> the materials are expensive.. learning is cheap - if you read and read and read and read
[09:08:19] <unrest> if youre learning by doing better learn with glass fibers as they're "cheap" compared to cf
[09:09:22] <jhaluska> I thought CF would be a handy skill to have.
[09:10:02] <jhaluska> I wish the Z2 had a slightly larger screen
[09:11:25] <jhaluska> My brother is a pipe welder, I thought he should have gotten into CF to earn extra money.
[09:21:13] <unrest> http://fotos.mtb-news.de/img/photos/7/2/0/3/5/_/large/herzanhaenger01_res.jpg
[09:21:36] <Foxx> is that charm home made?
[09:21:40] <unrest> the "wire" is 1.5mm (diameter) titan
[09:21:41] <Foxx> cause' its really nice
[09:21:43] <unrest> yep, by me :)
[09:21:45] <unrest> thanks
[09:21:47] <Foxx> very nice!
[09:21:50] <unrest> :)
[09:21:59] <unrest> made it for my girlfriend
[09:22:06] <Foxx> thats special
[09:22:16] <Foxx> i like hand crafting gifts for people i give a crap about
[09:22:21] <Foxx> it shows i care
[09:22:25] <Foxx> anyone can buy something
[09:22:28] <unrest> http://fotos.mtb-news.de/img/photos/7/2/0/3/5/_/large/herzanhaenger02_res.jpg
[09:22:44] <unrest> indeed
[09:22:55] <Foxx> how did you make the charm?
[09:22:59] <Foxx> and out of what?
[09:23:02] <Foxx> copper?
[09:23:04] <unrest> carbon fiber
[09:23:09] <unrest> resin and hardener
[09:23:15] <Foxx> it looks metal
[09:23:34] <unrest> it's pure 160g/m² twill
[09:23:35] <jhaluska> I bet its really light
[09:23:39] <unrest> 5g
[09:23:53] <jhaluska> 5g? nice
[09:24:03] <jhaluska> Good caring to weight ratio. ;)
[09:24:08] <unrest> hehe ^^
[09:24:31] <Foxx> lol
[09:25:25] <unrest> but my problem atm is: what to give her on our 2nd anniversary on august 13th...
[09:25:28] <unrest> any ideas?
[09:26:26] <jhaluska> A hug?
[09:26:35] <unrest> that's standard ^^
[09:26:54] <jhaluska> Make a CF flower
[09:27:12] <unrest> that's next to impossible..
[09:27:16] <jhaluska> Something like a tulip might not be too hard.
[09:27:37] <jhaluska> Just make 4 identical petals and then attach them to a stem, and two CF leaves.
[09:27:44] <unrest> hollow forms that have to look nice from both sides are the hardest to make..
[09:27:58] <jhaluska> Well it would be a bunch of seperate pieces
[09:28:17] <jhaluska> You know what a tulip is right?
[09:28:24] <unrest> the attaching's the hard part when doing so.
[09:28:37] <unrest> sure i do
[09:28:37] <unrest> i might be german AND young, bu not stupid..!
[09:28:37] <jhaluska> http://www.freefoto.com/images/12/61/12_61_52---Tulip_web.jpg
[09:28:39] <unrest> ;)
[09:28:46] <jhaluska> Well I don't know what they call them over there.
[09:28:49] <unrest> tulpe
[09:28:51] <unrest> ;)
[09:29:00] <jhaluska> Never would figure out what that is. :P
[09:29:46] <jhaluska> hmm attaching a stem would be the hardest part, I would say just use a piece of wire.
[09:30:52] <jhaluska> Maybe bend the wire into a star at the top and glue the petals under the wire.
[09:30:59] <unrest> haha.. ymmd
[09:31:05] <unrest> "glue"...
[09:31:11] <unrest> as if it was that easy..
[09:31:31] <jhaluska> Epoxy?
[09:31:44] <jhaluska> I'm not saying its easy.
[09:31:44] <unrest> sure, but it has to look _nice_
[09:31:57] <jhaluska> Well you would have a month to try
[09:32:09] <jhaluska> And if you screw it up you have enough time to try something else :P
[09:32:24] <jhaluska> It might depend on how much she liked the Heart tho
[09:32:39] <Foxx> so i take it that #zipit doesnt have an anal 'No Off Topic Chat' rule? ;}
[09:32:47] <unrest> idts :)
[09:32:57] <unrest> she likes the heart a lot
[09:33:27] <jhaluska> Foxx: I don't think it is big enough for that rule. Not exactly like we're swamped here.
[09:33:28] <unrest> Foxx, any nice electronic ideas to give to her?
[09:33:40] <Foxx> actually... yes
[09:33:42] <Foxx> hold on
[09:33:44] <Foxx> ill get a link
[09:33:48] <unrest> sure
[09:33:55] <unrest> i just wanted to go make a coffe, so take your time :)
[09:34:10] <Foxx> http://www.solarbotics.com/products/k_sd/
[09:34:19] <Foxx> BEAm robotics, a 'Solar Dancer'
[09:34:27] <Foxx> the plans are freely available
[09:34:35] <Foxx> and parts arent too hard if you are crafty
[09:34:45] <Foxx> or you can make some Photovores
[09:35:24] <Foxx> they will pick up solar energy during the day, and blnk randomly at night
[09:35:29] <Foxx> like fireflies
[09:35:51] <Foxx> with good enough craftsmenship, they make great tiny tech pets that look really pretty
[09:37:53] <unrest> NICE!
[09:38:10] <Foxx> quite
[09:38:27] <Foxx> with some mylar and a dull pen you can put in veins and such
[09:38:39] <Foxx> and make it reflect sunlight on the celing
[09:38:59] <Foxx> and with some tweaks, you can make it 'flap' more or less often
[09:39:07] <Foxx> BEAM robotics is fun
[09:39:14] <Foxx> i was really into it about 10 years ago
[09:39:15] <unrest> well.. the problem is the pcb..
[09:39:21] <Foxx> no need for PCB
[09:39:26] <unrest> not?
[09:39:30] <Foxx> its very simple
[09:39:31] <Foxx> nope
[09:39:36] <Foxx> use copper wire as a base
[09:39:45] <unrest> thick copper wire i guess?
[09:39:51] <Foxx> run two strong solid copper wires as a 'body'
[09:40:40] <Foxx> or paper clips....
[09:41:48] <unrest> and the wings are made out of aluminium foil i guess?
[09:41:50] <jhaluska> make a CF butterfly!
[09:42:19] <unrest> jhaluska, did you get my comment yesterday that i#m allergic to resin/hardener? ^^
[09:42:26] <jhaluska> oh no
[09:42:46] <jhaluska> ok, I guess you shouldn't do CF unless you want to then :)
[09:43:13] <unrest> unless i "need" to
[09:43:19] <unrest> i almost always want to..
[09:45:30] <unrest> Foxx, thanks! =)
[09:46:06] <Foxx> no prob
[09:46:09] <Foxx> as for the wings
[09:46:10] <Foxx> mylar
[09:46:13] <Foxx> aluminum foil
[09:46:14] <Foxx> be creative
[09:46:17] <Foxx> something reflective
[09:46:27] <Foxx> the solar pannel...
[09:46:31] <Foxx> old crappy calculator
[09:46:41] <Foxx> the rest of the parts can be salvaged from an old radio or telephone
[09:46:53] <Foxx> the coil for the electromagnet... old headphone speaker
[09:46:55] <Foxx> pull the driver coil out
[09:47:55] * unrest looks over his spare part box
[09:48:06] * unrest seems to have everything at hand
[09:48:10] * unrest investigates further
[09:49:35] <unrest> :/
[09:49:41] <Foxx> im sure you do
[09:49:51] <unrest> no 3300 capacitor
[09:49:52] <Foxx> google BEAM Solar Dancer
[09:49:58] <Foxx> parts arent important
[09:49:59] <Foxx> make due
[09:50:00] <Foxx> use 4700
[09:50:28] <Foxx> 1600
[09:50:34] <unrest> i have a 4700/25V here though ^^
[09:50:42] <Foxx> BEAm is about improvise with minimal parts
[09:50:44] <Foxx> voltage doesnt matter
[09:58:40] <unrest> the value of the resistors doesnt' matter too i guess?
[09:58:45] *** FireEgl has joined #ZipIt
[09:58:51] <unrest> but how to tell pnp from npn resistors?
[09:59:01] <Foxx> look up the part number
[09:59:05] <Foxx> its marked on the transistor
[10:00:55] <Foxx> its hard to read
[10:00:59] <Foxx> its marked on the flat side
[10:01:08] <Foxx> get a bright light and a lens to look at it
[10:02:09] <unrest> yeah. got a big bunch of transistors before me..
[10:06:36] <unrest> do you have a good list in your bookmarks?
[10:07:08] <Foxx> of?
[10:07:53] <unrest> transistors/part numbers
[10:07:56] <unrest> to look up
[10:08:24] <Foxx> not really
[10:08:29] <Foxx> i just know how to cross reference
[10:11:49] <Foxx> its not too parts specific
[10:12:05] <Foxx> most general NPN and PNP transistors will work
[10:12:33] <unrest> yeah, but i need some way of telling pnp from npn
[10:12:39] <unrest> 536 is pnp, i've found out
[10:12:46] <Foxx> 536?
[10:12:55] <Foxx> there should be a 2N or other prefix
[10:12:58] <Foxx> usually
[10:13:33] <Foxx> a 536 should be a BD class
[10:13:35] <Foxx> i think
[10:13:42] <Foxx> so its a bd356
[10:13:42] <Foxx> i THINK
[10:13:44] <Foxx> dont quote me
[10:14:24] <Foxx> if you want some build ideas...
[10:14:27] <Foxx> what i did for mine
[10:14:36] <Foxx> i used some thick guage paper clips as a body...
[10:14:41] <Foxx> and the cap' was at the ass end
[10:15:00] <Foxx> i used a small tube, i think it was a large plastic pen to house all the stuff
[10:15:54] <Foxx> and heatshrink tubing over the thole thing
[10:16:07] <Foxx> i put the coil on the bottom, and solar pannel on top using hot glue
[10:16:24] <Foxx> the heat shrink made it look nice, and it let met paint it with acryllic
[10:17:44] <Foxx> i made the wings out of an old mylar party baloon sandwitched with some clear acryllic laminate
[10:17:54] <Foxx> i think it was book laminate or something
[10:17:59] <Foxx> for hardback books
[10:18:03] <Foxx> or something
[10:18:06] <Foxx> it was cheap stuff
[10:18:21] <Foxx> i used a nail to make viens into the wings
[10:20:53] <Foxx> ill bbl
[10:22:06] <unrest> hehe. foun an npn and a pnp transistor =)
[11:27:43] *** JP has joined #zipit
[11:38:16] <JP> i think i broke my z1. i found the original wall transformer left it plugged in all night. This morning tried to turn it on (while plugged in) light turns green while holding the button but won't stay.
[11:38:43] <JP> Unplugged the green led is real faint but, same thing
[11:41:00] <jhaluska> JP: You might want to take it apart and look for burnt components, but it does sound damaged to me.
[11:42:22] <JP> oh i forgot to mention, i did last night (though i should check again today). I opened it up and everything seemed normal except the metal around the power jack was a bit discolored. there was no smell to it though
[11:43:01] <JP> it didn't smell like it burnt the plastic. I should add that I haven't used the device in months. Maybe the battery was completely discharged and wont charge again
[11:43:46] <JP> I'm wondering if the device has to have a semi working battery for it to turn on.
