[10:37:59] <T0mW> drmikecrowe: hey, what's up?
[10:38:57] <drmikecrowe> Hey T0mW, not much. Got you email, and will respond today (I hope). There was a technical aspect of this I wanted to research before responding
[10:39:50] <T0mW> fine business. I've had some time to fill in content on openzipit.org regarding OE. Once I stopped using the dev branch, things got a whole lot easier.
[10:40:51] <drmikecrowe> ah, very good. I have some projects coming up I wanted to work with OE. I'll ping you when I get close. I'd like to get the latest up and going on my machine
[10:41:05] <T0mW> I've got to resolve the issue of no touch panel. Either retrofit the Z2 or come up with some kludged version of tslib that will use that joystick.
[10:42:17] <T0mW> drmikecrowe: I'm using the Z2 as a practical example of OE. The write-up is more about how to use OE than it would be the Z2. You may find it useful.
[10:42:26] <drmikecrowe> magon had compiled something using the GPE system which remapped the direction keys to the mouse.
[10:42:39] <drmikecrowe> I wanted to look at how GPE did that, but haven't had time
[10:42:41] <T0mW> interesting
[10:42:48] <drmikecrowe> We'd be very interested! LMK when you are finished
[10:43:11] <drmikecrowe> Yeah, it's something GPE specific. Opie based compiles didn't have that feature (IIRC)
[10:43:17] <T0mW> it's up now. There is quite a bit of content.
[10:43:36] <drmikecrowe> great -- I'll hope over there today and look
[10:43:36] <T0mW> I'll get in touch with magon then.
[10:43:51] <drmikecrowe> please -- I'd like to understand what component did that for us.
[10:44:07] <T0mW> have fun at work today. 3 more days and I will close on a home purchase.
[10:44:14] <T0mW> ?
[10:44:24] <T0mW> "component" ?
[10:44:36] <T0mW> in GPE ?
[10:44:47] <drmikecrowe> :D
[10:45:40] <drmikecrowe> Sorry, I meant something in GPE is mapping the keys into the mouse. Not sure what to call it (used component by default)
[10:47:10] <T0mW> yeah, I haven't had the time to look into that. I'm glad that magon did that. Rather than attempt to rewrite the zipit wiki OE content, I decided to put my own pages up. More as a tutorial. The stuff on the wiki is more about hacking than crafting a solution.
[10:56:12] <g1powermac_PB> hey drmikecrowe
[10:56:20] <drmikecrowe> hey g1powermac_PB, what's up?
[10:56:31] <g1powermac_PB> nothing much
[10:56:40] <g1powermac_PB> got a question for ya
[10:56:44] <drmikecrowe> shoot
[10:56:55] <g1powermac_PB> whats with the price drop?
[10:57:24] * g1powermac_PB is ready to buy a half a dozen at $50 a piece :-)
[10:58:00] <drmikecrowe> If you look at it carefully, it's not really a price drop (the amortized cost is actually slightly more than the $150).
[10:58:20] <drmikecrowe> People really like the cell-phone pricing model.
[10:58:37] <g1powermac_PB> ahh, I figured there was something
[10:59:06] <g1powermac_PB> though there is a seller on amazon selling them at $38 a piece with no strings attached
[10:59:38] <drmikecrowe> We had lots of PR units go out, and they've found there way there and eBay for sure
[10:59:58] <g1powermac_PB> ahh
[11:01:38] * T0mW bought two of them
[11:02:22] <T0mW> you know, that SDI (SD 4 bit interface) on the Marvell is slower than that of the Samsung S3C2410?
[11:02:54] <T0mW> PXA270 @ 300MHz is only 1.5 MB/s while S3C2410 @ 200MHz is 2.07 MB/s
[11:02:58] <T0mW> noteworthy
[11:03:03] <T0mW> faster is not better
[11:04:46] <g1powermac_PB> hmm, interesting
[11:05:58] <drmikecrowe> hey guys, one interesting thing is in the works. We are starting to extend the zipit with Scripting via Lua. we're looking at using that to add social networking integration
[11:07:09] <T0mW> heh, I don't know how social you'd expect a group of computer engineers to be?
[11:07:18] <g1powermac_PB> hah
[11:07:27] * T0mW doesn't have a facebook account
[11:07:37] <g1powermac_PB> me neither
[11:07:40] <drmikecrowe> haha, not sure. But, if there were folks who wanted to extend our applicaiton, we'll be offering that later this summer
[11:07:44] <g1powermac_PB> all I got is a dead blog
[11:07:50] <T0mW> lol
[11:08:21] <T0mW> g1powermac_PB: I've got a couple of urls that I occasionally fill in with content.
[11:08:38] <g1powermac_PB> oh, I got a few of those too
[11:08:46] <T0mW> where?
[11:09:16] <g1powermac_PB> g1powermac.com, g1technology.com, g1core.com
[11:09:28] <g1powermac_PB> though the g1core one is blank atm
[11:09:50] <T0mW> ooo, pretty
[11:11:16] <T0mW> I gave up on trying to make my sites pretty and wrote my own scripting language with a php parser to make it into html / css
[11:11:17] <g1powermac_PB> I also got thisoldgadget.com (.org and .net too) for a video podcast I'm going to make
[11:13:10] <g1powermac_PB> I really do need to recreate the blog of mine
[11:13:39] <g1powermac_PB> and use it to document my recent projects
[11:14:06] <g1powermac_PB> lately I've just been using my flickr account to upload photos of my projects
[11:14:26] <T0mW> g1powermac_PB: yeah, that is what I basically do with the websites. I don't care too much for having others permission to change my content
[11:14:43] <T0mW> s/having/giving
[11:15:24] <T0mW> A lot of the stuff I write about are notes to myself.
[11:16:12] <g1powermac_PB> yea
[11:16:30] <g1powermac_PB> thats what I used my blog for back a few years ago
[11:19:37] <g1powermac_PB> speaking of pictures, I should put up some shots of the studio I built myself to film "This Old Gadget"
[11:20:26] <g1powermac_PB> true to the title of the show, I'm using almost no professional equipment except the actual camera gear and one good tripod ;-)
[11:21:07] <g1powermac_PB> everything was either hand built or bought cheap off ebay
[11:21:34] <T0mW> heh, have web, will play
[11:22:29] <g1powermac_PB> yup, yup
[11:23:41] * g1powermac_PB can't wait till he gets a welder
[11:23:46] <g1powermac_PB> so I can build more fun stuff
[11:24:03] <T0mW> heh
[11:24:40] <g1powermac_PB> I absolutely love working with aluminum
[11:24:55] <g1powermac_PB> it ain't cheap stuff to use, but its oh so nice to drill, tap, and cut
[11:25:13] <T0mW> ooh, I've never tried to do TIG or MIG
[11:25:48] <g1powermac_PB> yea, I'm going for a MIG convertible welder
[11:25:51] <T0mW> many years ago, I worked as an auto mechanic (my Dad's shop) and did some arc + gas.
[11:26:08] <g1powermac_PB> ahh, cool
[11:26:17] <g1powermac_PB> I've always wanted to work with metal
[11:26:25] <g1powermac_PB> and I'm finally amassing the tools to do it
[11:27:22] <T0mW> I took a volkswagon beetle (the old one) removed the body from it down to the bottom chassis. then cut 20" out of the chassis and welded it back together.
[11:27:49] <g1powermac_PB> hah, cool
[11:28:04] <T0mW> then used that chassis, motor / transaxle, steering thingy to run around in the fields on my grandfathers farm
[11:28:17] <g1powermac_PB> nice
[11:28:42] <T0mW> took the muffler off it and put on straight pipes on the cylinder head. Noisy as hell, but fun.
[11:28:47] <g1powermac_PB> I got a four wheel pedal cart sitting downstairs just waiting to be converted to an electric powered cart :-)
[11:29:15] <g1powermac_PB> hah
[11:29:30] <T0mW> I wish I had the time to mess with mechanical stuff, I would like to build a robotic lawn mower, just because.
[11:29:43] <g1powermac_PB> I'm actually thinking of doing some other things to the cart
[11:29:58] <T0mW> you watch farscape?
[11:30:21] <g1powermac_PB> one is to use the pedals to generate electricity to charge the batteries instead of drive the wheels
[11:30:29] <g1powermac_PB> and the other is to add solar panels to it :-)
[11:30:37] <g1powermac_PB> nope, never seen it
[11:30:41] <T0mW> you know those little droids that are always running around underfoot on the ship?
[11:31:06] <T0mW> that is what my mower would be, a swarm of mini-bots to each do a part of the lawn.
[11:31:12] <g1powermac_PB> hah, cool
[11:31:26] <T0mW> yeah, not a single monster mower, just little bots
[11:31:40] <g1powermac_PB> you should talk with RobotGuy, he's got aspirations of building swarm bots like that
[11:31:55] <T0mW> it would be entertaining to watch the work. one unit doing the job would be boring
[11:32:04] <g1powermac_PB> ya
[11:32:08] <T0mW> s/the work/them work/
[11:32:38] <g1powermac_PB> or you know, you could buy multiple roomba like lawnmowers they make now and just mod them to work together. . .
[11:32:51] <g1powermac_PB> though that would prolly be quite expensive
[11:32:59] <T0mW> the power source is the problem. liquid fuel contains the most energy per pound but is the most dangerous to allow to run unsupervised.
[11:33:03] <T0mW> electrics are heavy.
[11:33:30] <g1powermac_PB> true that, unless you use lithium ion, then you're just asking for a possible explosion if something goes wrong
[11:33:58] <T0mW> hey, does the Z2 have a microphone input as well on the headphone jack?
[11:34:10] <T0mW> not the rear conn, just the one on the side?
[11:34:24] * g1powermac_PB still can't fathom why someone would drive a car with lithium ion batteries powering it. . .
[11:34:45] <g1powermac_PB> thats just asking to be a death trap moreso than a standard gasoline based car
[11:35:13] <g1powermac_PB> I think its just a headphone jack, I think
[11:35:18] <g1powermac_PB> though I could be wrong
[11:37:07] <drmikecrowe> T0mW: It's both (headphone/mic)
[11:37:52] <T0mW> oh, thanks
[11:41:31] <g1powermac_PB> heh, I was wrong
[11:42:03] <T0mW> ~lart g1powermac_PB
