[12:28:10] <angelr> Hi Everyone, I just received a z2 and looking for a way to access the boot console. I checked linux.wireless.com and was unable to access the hardware pin-out for the connector on the back. What's the easiest way to get my own rootfs onto the device?
[12:34:13] <Magon> angelr: miniSD card

[13:44:17] <angelr> Hi Magon, Thanks for your reply. How do I configure the boot loader to use the miniSD card as the root device? Is it preconfigured to do so?
[13:57:30] <Magon> angelr: are you registered on linux.zipitwireless.com?
[14:09:02] <angelr> Magon, I am not. If I register, will I be able to find the answers to similar questions?
[14:09:18] <Magon> angelr: yes

[19:32:39] <mi_dave> Anyone else playing with r52 yet?
[21:12:49] *** bryank has joined #zipit
[21:22:19] <mi_dave> bryank: ping
[21:22:39] <bryank> mi_dave: hey
[21:22:49] <bryank> from earlier today -- i'm pretty sure the PW is blank
[21:22:59] <mi_dave> yeah for root but are there any other users?
[21:23:24] <bryank> a few, but they look like they're for daemons
[21:23:27] <bryank> and you can't log in as them anyway
[21:28:21] <mi_dave> okay, what should i be trying out? I see a couple issues already. 1) whatever screensaver/powersave mode is configured ends up displaying random horizontal lines on screen
[21:28:47] <mi_dave> 2) my guess is there needs to be a service written to handle charging the battery
[21:29:14] <mi_dave> which will probably require some help from drmikecrowe since i haven't seen any hardware details listed for the charging/monitoring circuit yet
[21:29:20] <bryank> oh boy
[21:29:33] <bryank> does the battery not charge, or does it just not light up leds?
[21:29:37] <mi_dave> where would i find the wpa supplicant conf file?
[21:29:56] <bryank> it takes a config file as an argument, but i don't even see its binary installed...
[21:32:50] <mi_dave> The battery was charging under the zipit setup (yellow batt led) but after the reboot into the sd card the led was green. i ran the shell for a while and then restarted the zipit stuff and the charger kicked in again (or the yellow led at least)
[21:32:59] <mi_dave> this was all while plugged into ac power
[21:33:02] <bryank> however, bitbake did create a few .ipk files
[21:33:13] <bryank> on charging: that's obviously wrong, but i'm not sure what's going on
[21:33:58] <bryank> is there a /sys/class/power_supply directory?
[21:34:48] <mi_dave> maybe the charging circuit is autonomous and the led indication defaulted to green
[21:34:53] <mi_dave> no /power_supply dir
[21:34:59] <bryank> dang, kernel's too old then -- what about anything related to power under /proc/acpi?
[21:38:37] *** nhoman_ has joined #zipit
[21:38:53] <mi_dave> no acpi dir either
[21:38:58] <bryank> ...
[21:39:02] <bryank> oh, duh, that's because acpi is x86-only
[21:39:30] <bryank> no idea how to tell what's providing power to the device then..
[21:41:51] <mi_dave> keyboard response is not great either (no disrespect to ethicalclone)
[21:42:37] <bryank> because it's polling? or can't you tell for sure?
[21:42:41] <mi_dave> so the wpa supplicant was not part of the base image?
[21:42:42] <bryank> i don't know if the gpio stuff can generate interrupts...
[21:42:51] <bryank> looks like it was part of the base image, sort of. not on the rootfs, but it did build a package
[21:43:41] <mi_dave> keyboard response - you have to wait after holding alt or shift down before hitting the 2nd key for it to see the 2nd key press
[21:44:27] <mi_dave> occasionally autorepeat kicks in unexpectedly but i think that is usually when shift-ing or alt-ing
[21:44:32] <mi_dave> minor issues
[21:44:38] <bryank> yeah, hopefully
[21:44:46] <bryank> not sure if they're fixable (would depend on what's going on exactly)
[21:48:53] <mi_dave> still pretty cool to be running a linux shell on such a small device
[21:49:11] <bryank> yep :-)
[21:49:19] <bryank> on wpa_supplicant: looks like the package uses /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, i think
[21:49:21] <mi_dave> any idea what controls the screen blanking/screensaver?
[21:49:29] <bryank> not really...
[21:51:58] <mi_dave> no w* under /etc. would it be hidden?
[21:52:08] <bryank> no, it just didn't get installed, i think
[21:52:11] <bryank> into the .tar.gz file that i used to generate the sd card
[21:52:46] <bryank> er, .tar, not .tar.gz
[21:53:04] *** nhoman has quit IRC
[21:53:23] <mi_dave> my unix/linux is very rusty. ps shows 21 processes (besides the ps)
[21:53:31] *** nhoman_ is now known as nhoman
[21:53:43] <mi_dave> including a couple named [wlan_...
[21:54:00] <bryank> any difference with ps -e? or "ps -e --format=pid,command" to see more of the cmdline
[21:54:11] <bryank> the [] processes are kernel threads
[21:54:16] <bryank> i.e. not really processes
[21:54:28] <mi_dave> ps barks with a BusyBox error with any switches and says Usage: ps
[21:54:31] <bryank> oh -- well never mind then
[21:59:21] <mi_dave> any other useful commands that I've forgotten?
[21:59:30] <bryank> check around in /bin and /sbin, plus /usr/bin and /usr/sbin ;-)
[21:59:44] <bryank> (no idea what of that would be "useful" though)
[22:02:15] <mi_dave> not sure if the rtc implemented. how do i display local time?
[22:02:30] <bryank> date
[22:02:33] <bryank> or "TZ=EDT date"
[22:02:34] <bryank> er, EST
[22:02:48] <mi_dave> it is now jan 1 1970... oh well
[22:03:01] <bryank> todo: figure out if ntpd will build
[22:03:54] <mi_dave> uh oh, i type more to see if it was implemented and now i'm stuck. do i need a ctrl-C?
[22:04:06] <bryank> the program more? q might exit as well as ctrl-c
[22:04:57] <mi_dave> no q no ctrl-c no power button. looks like a reset...
[22:08:25] <bryank> ctrl-\ possibly?
[22:08:30] <bryank> (i think that's what sends sigquit)
[22:09:11] <mi_dave> wow - well now i know how to generate a ctrl-c with no ctrl key
[22:09:42] <bryank> ?
[22:09:58] <mi_dave> so i was attempting to pipe the ls output to more. what pipe/redirection character do i need?
[22:11:37] <bryank> not sure how to type it on that keyboard, but it's the | character...
[22:11:44] <bryank> shift-backslash on a normal PC keyboard
[22:11:58] <bryank> (well, US layout anyway)
[22:12:04] <mi_dave> not labeled anywhere but let me lookup ethicalclone's keyboard map
[22:14:14] <mi_dave> the map on the wiki is not complete. not sure where i saw a more complete map
[22:14:27] <mi_dave> i think it was in a file somewhere
[22:14:41] <bryank> there was a keymap file that i remember looking at somewhere; let me see if i can find it in the oe tree somewhere
[22:27:21] <bryank> ah hah -- zipkeymap.map in the fatroot -- does alt-1 work?
[22:27:22] *** GPSFan has quit IRC
[22:28:37] <mi_dave> tilde
[22:32:46] <bryank> hmm; supposedly alt-1 was "bar", which is shift-backslash on my (PC) layout
[22:32:55] <bryank> shift-backslash is also supposed to be "bar" in zipkeymap.map
[22:32:56] <mi_dave> i think with the matrix layout certain key combinations are not possible - at least with the current driver
[22:33:10] <bryank> or ctrl-< maybe?
[22:33:25] <bryank> yeah, could be
[22:34:43] <mi_dave> no backslash labeled. oh well, enough for tonight. i'll bring it in tomorrow and you can drive
[22:34:53] <bryank> (and we've monopolized the irc channel long enough too ;-) )
[22:35:00] <mi_dave> sorry folks...
[22:37:43] <bryank> anyway, see you tomorrow
